Adoption Date: 2/5/2013, Revised: ; 3/15/16, Reviewed: 4/23/19

The Brockport School District fully adopts the provisions of the Concussion Management

and Awareness Act. In addition, the District adopts the recommendations of The New York

State Education Department (NYSED) and the New York State Department of Health (DOH)

for reducing the risk of head injuries in students and for responding to and managing

concussions when they do occur.

The District will strive to reduce the risk of head injuries and concussions by maintaining

high standards of safety in its facilities and equipment, including protective gear used by

student athletes in athletic events. In relevant contexts, the District will also emphasize safe

practices through instruction to students and communication with parents.

The Superintendent will establish and maintain guidelines detailing the District’s

implementation of the NYSED and DOH recommendations. Pursuant to those

recommendations, the District will establish a Concussion Management Team, including the

medical director, which will play a central role in the development and maintenance of these

guidelines. The guidelines will include, but are not limited to the provisions listed below.

  • The required training of key staff members with respect to the recognition of and response to c oncussions
  • Strategies for preventing and reducing the risk of concussion
  • Procedures for providing information to parents and teachers regarding the signs and symptoms of concussion and the District’s Return to Play/Classroom Protocol
  • Procedures for identifying an athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion, with an immediate removal from play, and for phasing the student back into classroom and athletic activities as his/her recovery warrants
  • The roles and responsibilities of key staff members involved in concussion identification and management.

The Concussion Management Team will maintain an ongoing review of the guidelines and protocols and will recommend changes as experience and additional insight to concussions warrant.
