13 Reasons Why

Dear Parents and Guardians,

You may recall the debut of a controversial Netflix series last May titled “13 Reasons Why.” The series focused on a 17-year-old girl who committed suicide and left behind a series of tapes that unraveled the mystery of her tragic choice. Upon its release, school districts locally, regionally and across the country expressed concern with the mature content of the series and its impact on students.

The show will return for a second season on May 18. While we are not certain what the exact content will entail, cast members say it tackles difficult topics such as sexual assault, substance abuse, suicide and more. Though we do not recommend our students view the series (particularly without a parent or caregiver), we all play a vital role in promoting the social and emotional wellbeing of our students and it is important we use this as a teachable moment.

Following the controversial nature of the first season, Netflix produced a video from 13 Reasons Why cast members to caution viewers about the difficult topics the upcoming season covers (see video here). It also has a link to crisis resources: 13reasonswhy.info. Additionally, I am attaching a document from the National Association of School Psychologists that provides guidance, precautions and resources regarding the series, along with a document that lists talking points from the Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

As always, our students’ social and emotional wellbeing remains a priority. The most important thing we can do is listen to our students and offer support to those who may be struggling. Our district’s mental health staff are also available to speak with students should they require assistance.

Thank you for your partnership in supporting our students and please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school counselor, social worker, psychologist or administrator if you have questions or concerns.

Best,
Lesli
