How Dare the Sun RiseAn account of a Democratic Republic of Congo refugee who endured the unthinkable and relocated to Rochester has brought Brockport High School students and staff together in a reading project. The community is invited to join the discussion during the culmination of the project on Nov. 29.

Brockport High School students read the book titled “How Dare the Sun Rise: Memoirs of a War Child,” by Sandra Uwiringiyimana. The book, which students accessed on their laptops and digital devices, is about strength and resilience through the eyes of a child who decided to turn adversity into an opportunity for advocacy.

Brockport High School staff also read the book and engaged in conversations with students during social studies classes and in advisement. Parents were also encouraged read the book and join the discussion.

The project will come to life during its culmination on Nov. 29 when the author will visit the high school to bring first-hand insight to the students. Further, the project extends beyond the walls of the high school into the greater community as the author will visit the Seymour Library that evening. Parents and community members are invited to attend the event at the Seymour Library, located at 161 East Avenue in Brockport. Uwiringiyimana will speak at 6:30 p.m. and the Brockport PTSA is hosting a reception to follow. Books are available at the Brockport High School Library, through the Monroe County Library System and at Lift Bridge Book Shop. For more information contact the Seymour Library at 637-1050 or the Brockport High School Library at 637-7449, ext. 7845.
