Traditional Food Based Menu Planning

Brockport's Food Service Department is committed to meeting the Federal Dietary Guidelines and the recommendations of USDA's MyPlate. To meet this goal, meals are planned then nutritionally analyzed by computer application to meet nutrition standards for students that are age/grade appropriate for calories, fat, saturated fat, protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C. These menus also must average 30 percent or fewer calories from fat and less than 10 percent of the calories from saturated fat averaged over a week’s time.

These regulations were implemented by Congress because the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Congress acknowledged that it was reimbursing meals that mirrored typical American eating habits. In the United States, chronic diet related diseases are prevalent, and the percentage of people who are overweight or obese is increasing. Diets contain too much fat, salt, sugar and too little fiber. School meals must now become the standard for healthy meals!

Brockport CSD has always maintained a healthy meal program. We offer fresh fruits and vegetables daily and plenty of other nutritional food choices. During the local harvest season, our department sources many of these fresh fruits and vegetables to be prepared and served in our kitchens. We will continue to improve an already excellent program. Recent changes to our program include more fresh baked goods and juice products are offered, and low-fat recipes are integrated into meal planning.

Our department has received instructions and training to meet the mandated Nutritional Guidelines. We ask for your support as parents, guardians, and all those concerned about the well-being and health of our students. We will continue to keep you informed and invite your questions and concerns.
